I didn’t have any trouble getting servant evangelism started in my church, I just started doing it. Oh, the church had some cards printed up for me to use that say, “Have a Blessed Day” on the front, and on the back is some information about our church. A friend from church and myself over the past few months passed out 50 or so carnations on Valentine’s Day, 100 or so carnations on the Saturday prior to Mother’s Day and 50 or so Popsicles to parents and children at the soccer fields. This coming Father’s Day (the Saturday before Father’s Day) my plan was to pass out 50 or so $2.00 gift cards to Starbucks, in front of their store. Unfortunately, I was told by my church last week to cease this ministry. They seem to fear that I have no authority in passing out any literature with our church’s name on it. The church I attend is an evangelical Methodist (and no, that’s not an oxymoron) church in Sugar Land (suburb of Houston). But it is a highly structured church with lots of administrative rules. Also unfortunate is our senior pastor is on sabbatical. He has been fully aware of what I’ve been doing and wholly supports this ministry. But for now, my heart is broken because I can no longer do this outreach. Very sad.
