Thoughts On the Outward-Focused Life

Strategy of attacks

As we live a life of obedience we run into obstacles. Chalk it up to the universal principle of attack and counter-attack. As you sign up to do good and the will of God there will automatically come opposition. You are no longer moving in the direction of agreement with the culture that opposes God. Attack is simply going to be your lot in life every now and then.

How you deal with these attacks will be one of the first testings to come your direction. What are we to do with those who oppose us almost to an irrational level? Jesus and Paul give us simple counsel: “Bless and curse not.” Don’t give into your natural inclinations. Don’t strike back, even when they jolly well deserve it.

When is it time to worry

I was always told not to worry.

As a kid I was a natural worrier. When I couldn’t figure things I usually resorted to worrying.

Is there ever a good time to worry? Does worry accomplish anything good or worthwhile? It always has the promise something productive but it never produces good fruit. Abandon it! It is an utter waste of time. Instead, exert the faith God provides – a much stronger response to the unknown than the “w” word.

To me faith means not worrying.” – John Dewey

The difference between a good idea and a God idea

Good Idea
Stressed out
Serious-minded
Comes as result of brain storming and hard work
Comes from much effort
Feel accomplished in the end

God Idea
Relaxed
Fun!
Often spontaneous
Emphasis on Jesus’ vine-branch relationship (John 15)
Feel humbled, grateful at what God has done in spite of us

There’s nothing wrong with good ideas. They can be inspired to a degree, but God ideas are the ones to shoot for – they are the ones that tend to endure the test of time.

It Only Takes A Little

It only takes a little bit of life to make a difference. Sometimes we talk ourselves out of attempting something significant for God because we think it takes a great thing to make a dent in life. Nothing could be further from reality. God delights in taking something rather small, anointing it and blessing it to become a great thing.
God is looking for hearty people who are willing to step out of their ruts and risk with him. He is interested in setting up adventures with those who will risk the way forward.
Most of what we do is small stuff. That is the way life is set up. It is best that we give up on the notion of major accomplishments being the goal in life. What is left is the many things we can do that are small but significant in God’s hands.
