Tech Equipment Recommendations
I am what some call an “early adapter” in the world of all things high tech. My lovely and talented wife Janie sometimes calls me by other names such as “impetuous”for jumping into new technologies that are yet to be tried. On the other hand, I have seldom been burned on a new, promising piece of software, hardware, etc. that promises to make what I do more efficient and productive.

Some who have no understanding of this area of life, call what I am referring to here as “gadgets.” My oh my, what a horrible choice of words! A gadget is something one picks up at Radio Shack that always runs on 9-volt batteries and has a meter of some sort on it that checks all sorts of things I have pretty much no interest in (by the way, I shop at Radio Shack on a regular basis - no offense intended at that chain of stores - just picking up on a type).

My aim here is to bring you regular updates on tech issues that may well help you become more efficient as a leader.

Tech Essentials For the Outward Leader

In order to be effective as a leader it is necessary for all who go by that name / title, to spend their time wisely/appropriately. Success in any venture is a multi-faceted matter, but perhaps the main challenge is knowing how to invest one’s time wisely.

In offering these recommendations I am assuming you are working out “among the people”- not “hiding” behind a desk somewhere. The only ones in your organization who rightly can work behind a desk the better part of the day are those in accounting, graphics / IT - that’s about it! The term “MBWA” is not new to Tom Peters. All great leaders from history’s beginnings have done this intuitively. There is a reason Jimmy Carter wasn’t re-elected in 1980, he stayed behind his desk for the previous four years. All others who spend their time in the “office” in hiding, something that may seem instinctively the right thing to do, but assuredly the absolute disastrous thing to do, instinctive or not. “Go out young woman / man” is the rally call today. You will need some basic gear to do the job at your “office”: Starbucks, Paneras, Borders, the local mall food court where the people hang out, or the local pub. Have wifi, will travel!
