Simplifying God’s Voice

David hearing

Do you feel inadequate in the area of connecting with God’s voice? When you hear others mention they have gotten specific guidance from God does that hack you off a little? Maybe it seems a little arrogant to suggest that we can even hear from God. Don’t panic. Not to make light of your frustration but I believe God wants to speak to you…today.

One: remove the complication. Drop your requirements for hearing. Those lists are frustrating and usually not biblical. Your current situation is perfect for hearing from God no matter what is going on with you.

Two: thank God that he wants to speak to you. Scratch that. Thank him that he is going to speak to you.

Three: walk forward. Walk on. Don’t try to do anything mystical. Don’t slow down or tarry or introspect as you may have heard to do. God will speak to you in clear ways by giving you new, inspired thoughts. He does this in such a natural way you might not notice he is speaking. Remember the comments to Elijah, that he connects in a “Still, small voice.” It’s good to slow down to hear God’s voice, but the key to guidance isn’t found in your ability to slow down.

  1. Simpler yet: Go to the Bible. Read the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. Do. Repeat daily.

    God bless, Steve!

  2. Hey Steve, hope this makes it to you. Don’t know what it wants in the website space so….
Actually, your post is God speaking to me about hearing Him. Why I continue trying to figure this all out with my carnal mind when God can only speak to me in my spirit….. I am a very slow learner. Thank you for keeping it simple for us spiritually ADD people. The twelve steps of AA brings us to a place of dealing with our character defects and mine are many. I get overwhelmed looking at the big picture instead of taking things one step at a time, a day at a time. I can so relate to your analogy about being a rabbit and God making you a tortoise. Yep!
Thanks again for your very practical, un-mystical and non-voodoo approach to God! Tell Janie hi.

  3. Well put. Hyperspiritualizing was a bad habit of mine that I have bee able to break. Much easier to hear and see…Introspection and travail did little for me aside from cause anxiety.
