In October of 1871, the devastating Great Chicago Fire happened. The disaster claimed one-third of the structures of Chicago, hundreds of lives and all the buildings evangelist Dwight Moody was using in ministry. Moody’s response was to travel to New York City to seek to raise funds for rebuilding. He shares what happened there in his own words:
“I was crying all the time that God would fill me with his Spirit. Well, one day, in the city of New York – ah, what a day! – I cannot describe it. I seldom refer to it, it is almost too sacred an experience to name – Paul had an experience of which he never spoke for fourteen years – I can only say that God revealed himself to me, and I had such an experience of his love that I had to ask him to stay his hand.”
He reported that he was so overcome with a sense of God’s presence that he checked into a hotel and simply lay on the bed as God touched him.
May God empower us to do His bidding.
Thanks for sharing that… The Moody story of receiving the touch of God has been on my mind and part of my prayers all week….
