Rolling Stone magazine asked Bob Dylan where he stood spiritually a while back. A fair question considering the ins and outs his personal life has taken since he issued his fervently Christian albums. He hadn’t said much about Jesus for some time. The Hassidic Jews had claimed him to be one of their own after he showed up at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem to pray. So what’s the story, Mr. Zimmerman? His answer came in Dylanesque indirectness: “Check out my song Pressing On – that says it all.” The lyrics there are “I keep pressing on…to the higher calling of my Lord.”
What more can any of us do in following Jesus? We continue to move forward through thick and thin. Of course, we will falter. Sometimes we will be consistent. What we have going for us is that we have bought in for the long haul. We are pressing on no matter what.
It is difficult to deny our Lord once he’s touched our heart. I think the Lord was with Dylan when he wrote “how many times can a man turn his head, pretending he just didn’t see”.
